Announcing The 2009 Pride At Work Convention & GatheringRegistration fee (includes membership & breakfast): $50
Hotel: $99/night
The 2009 Pride At Work Convention has been revisioned- and we are heading back to our roots- the grassroots that is, as we head to Pittsburgh, home of the United Steelworkers, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the 2009 AFL-CIO Convention and gather, before the AFL-CIO Convention to envision a better world for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender workers.
We realize that current economic times makes it difficult for many of our members to travel. We commissioned a survey of members’ ability to attend a convention in 2009, and the results are not surprising. Over 75% of participants stated that they could either not afford to attend the convention or could not get time off work to attend. As an organization serving working class people this is disappointing, but not surprising.
At the same time as this economic maelstrom, we have reached our 10th anniversary as an official constituency group of the AFL-CIO, and are embarking on mapping out our path for the next ten years, and we would like your help.
In September 2009, both Co-Presidents of the organization, T Santora and Nancy Wohlforth, plan to step down. We look forward to thanking both of them for their years of service, and welcoming new leadership to guide Pride At Work through our "Pride At Work 2.0" phase.
Pride At Work has always been different than other organizations: we were created by the grassroots, and the grassroots provides the leadership and direction of the organization. For this convention, we are asking that you, the grassroots, step up again and help us chart our course for 2010 and beyond.
So, we will still be having our convention September 11th - 12th, followed by the AFL-CIO Diversity Conference on the 13th, in Pittsburgh, PA. The difference is there will be no speakers, no talking heads, unless you talk.
At this convention, we plan on doing two things:
1) Electing new officers
2) Bringing our grassroots together to develop our strategic plan
As a movement, we are on the precipice of great success—however as a movement, we are nothing without the input of our grassroots. This is the place to make your voice heard, and help set the agenda for a national movement for change.
This is not the time for workshops and rallies. This is the time for committed activists to come together and plot a course for Pride At Work to continue to be a driving force in bringing LGBT equality to the world.
Because this is a strategic planning convention, we have dropped the registration rate to $50, which includes a Pride at Work membership and basic coffee and continental breakfast. Our hotel rate for the convention is only $99/night.
Convention registration forms, hotel booking, sponsorship forms, commitment pages form, ad book forms, and other information can be found by clicking the links on the left side of the page. Please remember to stay on the 13th to make sure LGBT voices are heard at the AFL-CIO Diversity Conference (more information below).
Join us in charting the future of Pride At Work and the future of the LGBT struggle for equality.
Why Pittsburgh?
Originally, the Pride At Work National Executive Board was planning to hold our convention in San Francisco. Unfortunately, with the downturn in the economy, an overwhelming number of our members and allied organizations found the cost of attending a convention in San Francisco untenable in this economic climate.
Then, the AFL-CIO announced that they would be holding their 2009 Convention, which brings the chance of reunification of the labor movement, and new leadership at the AFL-CIO, in Pittsburgh. The AFL-CIO Convention begins on Monday, September 14th, 2009. So we decided to add our convention before the AFL-CIO convention so people can attend both.
Our agenda for this convention will be different than before- on Sunday, September 13 we will join our other sister constituency groups and participate in the 2009 AFL-CIO Convention Diversity Pre-Conference. The Pre-Conference will engage AFL-CIO delegates and elected officials on the importance of making sure the labor movement reflect the changing demographics of our country, and the world. The more LGBT people we bring- the more our issues will rise to the top.
We look forward to welcoming you to Pittsburgh. If you have any questions about the convention please email Jeremy.
