We upped our game at Celebrating Solidarity

Every June, we wrap up Pride Month with a bang at our Celebrating Solidarity event, and this year was nothing short of spectacular! Over 160 enthusiastic supporters flocked to the AFL-CIO in Washington, DC, marking our largest turnout ever—more than double last year’s attendance.

We honored two incredible award recipients: Starbucks Workers United and AFA-CWA President Sara Nelson, and were dazzled by the fierce performances of DC’s own drag sensation, Mari Con Carne. By day, Mari is a dedicated union teacher, and by night, she wowed us with Ariana Grande’s “Into You” after sharing how much the union means to her.

Vice President Jarel Sanders kicked off the event, celebrating our solidarity and highlighting queer campaigns like Starbucks Workers United and Grindr Workers United. Executive Director Jerame Davis connected Pride at Work’s powerful legacy with his personal story of union support 25 years ago and outlined our future goals.

Co-President Brittany Anderson, a former Starbucks barista, presented the first award to Starbucks Workers United, emphasizing the shared values of the labor movement and the importance of centering queer and trans issues. The award was accepted by members of SBWU’s Trans Rights Action Committee, who spoke passionately about the impact of Pride at Work’s support.

Treasurer Keturah Johnson introduced our final honoree, AFA-CWA President Sara Nelson, with heartfelt and humorous anecdotes, including a memorable voicemail from President Nelson. When President Nelson took the stage, she delivered a fiery speech on labor rights, unity, and the fight against capitalist exploitation.

Co-President Brittani Murray closed the evening with a powerful speech about love driving our work and the necessity of challenging the status quo. The night ended on a high note with Mari Con Carne returning to the stage for two more show-stopping performances.

It was a night of celebration, inspiration, and unity—truly our most unforgettable Celebrating Solidarity event yet!
